Four Mile Canyon Fire

A popular Colorado drive for motorcycles is the Peak-to-Peak Highway or By-Way which takes you on a wonderful scenic journey from Black Hawk/Central City to Estes Park (home of the Stanley Hotel best known for its presence in Stephen Kings movie "The Shinning").
This stretch of highway has long been regarded as a must do drive for Colorado vacationers and travelers. The Peak-to-Peak Highway is one of the rare few roads that you can easily view 14,000 ft  mountains such as Longs Peak with little or no hiking involved. The Peak-to Peak Highway has always been my most favorite ride, and one of the first rides I take guided tours on because of its easy of navigation and wonderous scenery.
Four Mile Canyon, covering nearly 15,000 acres from West Boulder Colorado to the Peak-to-Peak Highway, recently experienced a large fire that spread quickly to the surrounding area and has now devastated nearly 6,500 acres and has crumble 170 homes.

The fire, reportedly started by a ruptured propane tank, caught ablaze early morning of Memorial day is now only 60% contained and is the worst fire in Boulder County history. At one point 3,000 resideince were evacuated form theire homes, and were kept out of the area for three days. As of Friday evening, only about 2,000 poeple were aloud back in their homes but were told to stay on high alert as Coloroado weather can be very unpridictable. Although the Four Mile Canyon fire pales in comparison to the hystoric Haymen fire of June 2002, the impact will be felt for years to come. It will take some time before the beautiful aea around the Peak-to-Peak Highway is restored to its former self.
